By stating that you’re a non-smoker, you’re announcing it as an established fact; it’s a statement of who you are, similar to saying “I’m a banker,” or “I own my own company.” It’s all about mindset.

Another amazing fact is how swiftly the body begins recovery once you quit smoking. Although quitting smoking after you’ve developed lung cancer or heart disease is a little like closing the barn door after the horses have run away, in reality it’s never to late to quit. Within 20 minutes of your last cigarette, your blood pressure decreases, your pulse rate drops and the temperature in your extremities (hands and feet) returns to normal levels. (Within 20 minutes!)

Medications are also now available to help you quit smoking - such as the nicotine patch, which - depending on which brand you use - gradually reduces the amount of nicotine in your bloodstream over several weeks to help reduce the cravings you’ll feel to light up another cigarette. These medications are also available as gum, inhalers and nasal sprays - some require prescriptions, some can be purchased over the counter. Many people have found that this type of medication can alleviate much of the discomfort caused by nicotine withdrawal.

Find a “hot line” that supports smoking cessation. The more contact you have with therapists or counselors experienced in therapy for those who are quitting, the more likely it is you’ll succeed. Sometimes the ability to talk to someone who’s been through what you’re going through during withdrawal is enough to overcome those momentary symptoms.

Tell your family and friends that you’re quitting, and ask them for their help. They can assist you by not smoking around you, not leaving cigarettes out in your presence (out of sight, out of mind), and giving you encouragement as you work your way through withdrawal.

Part of getting ready to quit smoking also includes things like setting a specific quit date - whether you go “cold turkey” or engage in a gradual cessation, set a firm date that tells you exactly when you’ll become a non-smoker. Get a calendar and circle the date in red marking pen - or use some other method of setting that goal in your mind. Don’t say “I’m going to quit in 30 days.” Say “I’m going to quit smoking on June 15th.” Make it a specific, measurable goal.

Next, change the environment in your home or office - wherever you (used to) smoke. Don’t let other people smoke in your house, or office - don’t hang out in places where smoking is almost mandatory - such as bars or nightclubs. Repaint the inside of your house, clean the carpets, wash the drapes - in short, make it obvious that a non-smoker lives here. After all that work of cleaning up, you won’t want to relapse and return to the habit of smoking.

If you can address the stress in your life, it can help remove the reasons, or excuses, of why you feel the need to smoke. Perhaps you work at a job you really don’t like. Start making plans to change careers if that’s what it will take - investigate new employment options or educational opportunities that will have the ultimate goal of getting you into a position or job that appeals to you.

The variety of illnesses caused by smoking is amazing - throat and mouth cancer, lung cancer, bladder and liver cancer, brain tumors, macular degeneration (blindness), birth defects from stillborn infants to premature births, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), emphysema, heart disease and all it’s related complications - the list just goes on and on.

Added to the bad news is that nicotine is as addictive for some people as heroin or cocaine. Hence the reasons it can be so difficult to quit smoking - you’re actually kicking a drug habit - you can expect relapses and withdrawal symptoms just as when trying to kick a heroin addiction.

From minor inconveniences such as smell and staining of fingers, hair, clothing, furniture and draperies if you smoke inside your home to much more serious health effects such as strokes and a multitude of cancers - there is no doubt that smoking is harmful. And it’s not just harmful to the smoker - second-hand smoke also has the same harmful effects on those who live or work with smokers.

Join a yoga class or learn ways to meditate. When the craving for a cigarette arrives, replace it with a stretching exercise or a calming meditation session. Start a daily journal - when you feel the urge to light up, make an entry in the journal instead. There are innumerable ways you can distract yourself from that craving to smoke - find the ones that work best for you.

When you quit smoking, you need to change your daily routine that included cigarettes. For example, if you normally had a cup of coffee and a cigarette for breakfast, change that to a cup of tea and read the paper. Or check your email. Or have a healthy breakfast and a quick walk before you begin your daily tasks. Change the environment around you so that it doesn’t include time for smoking.

This isn’t just paranoid fantasy - it’s becoming a fact of life that legislators from local city councils to the federal government are taking aim at smokers, with the ultimate intent of outlawing smoking in any form.
